**Henry Root Austin was the son of Harvey and Jane Root Austin. He was born at Norvell, (village of Napolean) Jackson County, Michigan, and came with his family to Monroe, Mi. as a boy. They settled on a farm about two miles from the city, and later Henry attended the University of Michigan. When the Civil War broke out, Henry enlisted, and shortly before the end of the war, he was hurt in a train wreck in the Cumberland Mountains. He was ordered home and it took a long recovery of his injuries. Henry received a commission from the government as a railway mail clerk with the first route from Detroit to Toledo, and later from Cleveland to Chicago. This was one of the fastest and most heavily laden mail trains of the midwest. He later worked on the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton from Detroit to Bainbridge, Ohio. Henry was the oldest railway clerk in the state of Michigan. He married Elizabeth King Isham of Monroe, on June 25, 1869. There were no children from this union. He purchased ten acres of land and the home on North Macomb Street where he planted shade trees and made it one of the finest homes of the city. His wife Elizabeth preceded him in death by seven years. (by Lo Marie)

**Henry Root Austin was raised of sturdy discipline on the pioneer farm in Jackson County, Mi. He attended schools in his native village of Napolean, and later in Norvell, Jackson County. He taught in the country schools of Jackson County for four winter terms. He attended the University of Michigan only for a short while, as he was called for his services in the defense of the Union. Upon returning from the war, Henry entered the university again, having to discontinue his studies once more because of ill health. He became a salesman for West Virginia Oil Company, representing several states. In 1868, Henry entered into partnership with Hubbard and Boyd, which became engaged in the wholesale and mercantile business in Monroe, Michigan. The name of the business was Hubbard, Austin & Company. He dropped his interest in the company in 1873, to enter the railway mail service, which he was involved in for about 15 years. Henry was appointed postmaster of Monroe, Michigan in 1891, and held this position for four years. He purchased land for a home, but again, chose to re-enter the railway mail service in 1899, with his run being on the Detroit & Ironton Railroad between Detroit, and Bainbridge, Ohio. Henry always retained an interest in his old comrades of the Civil War, being a member of the Joseph R. Smith Post, No. 76, Grand Army of the Republic, where he served as commander for one year, and chaplain for six years. He has been a member of the Presbyterian Church and an elder for more than twenty-nine years, also served as a superintendent of the Sunday school. Henry married Miss Eliza King Isham on June 24, 1869, who was born and raised in Monroe County, Mi. In their home, they raised ten boys and ten girls over the years, to whom they gave true parental affection and excellent advantages. Their kindliness were well re-paid by the devotion of their children.
