Daniel Cain, acording to military records was born in Virginia in 1747 and fought in the Rev.War. They go on to state he collected his land grant in Greene Co., Ohio. Newspaper accounts state he was the oldest Rev.War veteran in Ohio at the time of his death, 1851. For many years people claimed his wife was Susannah Custer, now it is proven she was married to a Daniel Cain but he was a different man. His first wife and mother of his 11 children was a Ann ELSBERRY whom he maried in 1764. We will never be able now to convince everyone that they have the wrong Daniel. So many stories without research and non family members claiming they know it all. God help Daniel because he has left this earth with only the names of his children from two marriages, the first to Ann Elsberry in 1765 the second to Sarah Knight in 1814, the sister of his daughters husband, Samuel Knight. In 1846, 28 of his family died in a Colora Epidemic in Sugar Creek, Greene Co., Ohio. Sarah was still alive at his death. These are the only facts we can really depend on. His oldest Grandson, Daniel Cain Knight left a family Bible which states his grandfather died at 103 also. So while people still try to connect him in other ways to the Custer family, there is no way to prove it as the facts are just not there. NO WAY! In the Quaker records for Samuel Knight when he applyed for his membership transfer to Ohio, he stated they were traveling with his fathers inlaw, Daniel Cain and the children from that marriage. Ann Elsberry had either died in Harrison Co., Virginia or on the way to Ohio

DAR goes on to say all claims under Daniel Cain and Susannah Custer are regected as Susannah was married to another Daniel Cain. Their children are not listed as the same as our Daniel Cains children.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE ON WHAT THE DAR ACCEPTS BEFORE YOU SUBMIT YOUR CLAIM.

**** MARRIED ELLSBERRY IN 1764 **** (DAR Confirmed)
**** MARRIED SARAH KNIGHT IN 1814 ****(DAR Confirmed)

Just a note on Sarah Knight. Daniel's daughter Hannah married Samuel Knight. Sarah was Samuel Knights sister.

Daniel is buried on his farm that was sold to a man named Allen. The DAR has several times put a plaque on his grave but the man who ownes that farm keeps plowing over it. Hopefully the farm will be sold to someone who can find pride in have a Rev War Soldier buried there.

I received 3 emails today from a lady who insists that I am either stupid or nuts. She evidently is from a Daniel Cain who was married to Susanna Custer and insists the man on this site is him. However if you look at all the information I have posted, you will clearly see that this all is correct. My source's are the DAR-Military pension plans and best of all, a Bible.
I understand completly that for years and years this was a mixed bag but it no longer is. I will not change anything on this memorial and I know I have the backing of the Daughters of the American Revolution and that Bible to back me up! And Dianne Cain Black who first and formost cleared the whole thing up and presented it to the DAR.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, FRANK ELSBERRY, A RESEARCHER, GAVE US A FIRST NAME FOR ANN. IMAGAINE MY SURPRISE TO FIND THAT ANOTHER OF MY LINES COME FROM HER BROTHER. AND TO THINK WE ONLY STARTED WITH A LAST NAME TO FINDING A HUGH FAMILY THAT ALREADY HAD DANIEL CAIN ON THEIR RECORDS.

I have a FAG special friend named Becky Doane. She is related in what appears to be more than just a couple of families. I hope that she finds this memorial and attempts to spread the word. Becky did a lot of work on my Doile family in Kansas for me at the Maplewood Cemetery in Emporia, Kansas. Thank you Becky. Daniel Cain in the Family Data Collection - Individual Records
