Alex was a farmer. He and Sarah had six children, but only two daughters and a son lived to maturity. His only surviving son, John Alex, died of pneumonia five years later. It is believed that one unnamed infant daughter; a son, Barney; and a daughter, Idia J., are also buried in the John McLaurin Cemetery.
