Stewart Maiden was the head golf professional at Atlanta Athletic Club's East Lake Golf Club, and the man who first put a golf club into the hands of Bobby Jones. Although he played little tournament golf, Stewart Maiden's name is secure as the teacher of Bobby Jones, Alexa Stirling, and Watts Gunn. A native of Carnoustie, Scotland, Maiden followed his brother Jimmy to the United States and became head professional at Jones' home club, East Lake, in 1908. Jones didn't actually copy Maiden's swing, but he followed the older player as a youngster and naturally developed a stroke that strongly resembled it. Maiden had a knack for spotting flaws in Jones' swing and, more than once, the champion called on "Kiltie" to straighten out a hitch.

Stewart Maiden is buried in an unmarked "potters" grave at the East View Cemetery at East Lake.
