MCEACHIN, Margaret
FLORENCE - Margaret Howard McEachin died at her home early Tuesday morning, October 16, 2001. She was in her hundreth year.

She was born in her parent's home at Claussen, South Carolina, the daughter of Fitz Lee Howard and Louise Penn Ervin Howard. She was the widow of Peter Hector McEachin. One child was born of this union, Daniel Malloy McEachin.

After academic preparation at Flora McDonald, she entered Converse College and graduated in 1923. At the conclusion of her education, she spent her long and productive life in Florence, South Carolina. She taught school in Claussen, South Carolina, until her marriage in 1924.

She was an avid outdoorswoman whose passion was gardening. She was a member of the City of Florence Park Commission. She, along with Frank Key, Sr., was instrumental in the construction and care of Lucas Park. She cultivated and propagated camellias. She was a Master Gardner.

She was the oldest member of St. John's Episcopal Church. She organized the St. John's Episcopal Church Plant Bazaar and was active in the Women of the Church.

She was a member of the Renaissance Literary Club. She was also a member of the Plain Dirt Garden Club and the Iris Garden Club. She was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.

In addition to her son of Florence, she is survived by her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth E. McEachin; her granddaughter, Margaret M. Gates (Dennis) of Oregonia, Ohio; her grandson, Daniel Malloy McEachin, Jr. (Amy) of Florence; her great-grandchildren, Samuel G. Gates of Oregonia, OH, FitzLee H. McEachin, Peter H. McEachin, Amy E. McEachin and Daniel Malloy McEachin, III, all of Florence.

Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Charles D. Cooper at St. John's Episcopal Church in Florence, SC, at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, October 18, 2001, directed by WATERS-POWELL FUNERAL HOME. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Daniel M. McEachin.
