Carl was one of 13 children who died of Scarlet Fever in the summer and autumn of 1870, when Scarlet Fever was running rampet through the state of Michigan. He was the first child to die of the illness at West Ida Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was buried on 25 July 1870 at the young age of 11 years, 6 months, 29 days.
