The founders of The St Andrews Golf Club in Yonkers, New York, in 1888 were known as The Apple Tree Gang, because of the many apple trees on their 3-hole course. These golfing pioneers commandeered their own "clubhouse" — an old apple tree from whose gnarled branches they hung their coats and flasks of fine scotch whiskey.

The players pictured were Harry Holbrook, Alexander P.W. Kinnan, John B. Upham and John Reid. The caddies were Warren and Fred Holbrook, sons of the player.
