Clem was born in Royalton, Minn. He was a 1936 graduate of Royalton High School. Following high school, Clem began his Great Lakes career as a coal passer for Pittsburgh Steam Ship Co. During WW II, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, serving on the Great Lakes. in 1943, he married Eva Mary Skroch. Clem was a member of St. Michael?s Catholic Church. He was a consult on the tourist attraction, William A. Irving, including conducting tours of the engine room.

Clem is also survived by another daughter and three grandchildren.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
