Evening Times, Cumberland, Maryland, July 17, 1928: "The funeral of Mrs. John McGowan, of Gilmore, was held Saturday morning in Saint Joseph's Church, Midland. Rev, J. J. Brennan, pastor, officiated. Rev. Joseph P. Nolan, of St. Michael's parish, Frostburg, and Rev. Frank Ryan, of Saint Peter's Church. Westernport, relatives of the deceased, were in the sanctuary. The pallbearers were: Thomas Moore, George Kroll, Patrick Hughes, Michael Campbell, Patrick Nolan and James McGee; flower carriers: Patrick Mills, John McGowan and Joseph Moran. Mrs. McGowan was a lifelong resident of Western Maryland. She was the daughter of the late Simon and Bridget Nolan, who came to Lonaconing from Ireland, 79 years ago. The McGowans celebrated their golden wedding anniversary two years ago and Mrs. McGowan would have celebrated her seventy-second birthday today. Besides her husband, Mrs. McGowan leaves four sons, six daughters and thirty-one grandchildren. Among those who attended the funeral were: Daniel Ryan and sons, Dan and Regis of Pittsburgh; Michael Spence of New York, Miss Elsie Whitfleld of Akron, Ohio; Miss Angela Meyers of Washington, DC and Mrs. M. J. Spence of Johnstown, Pa."
