SAVANNAH: Eliza Bazemore, was oldest Georgian

By KAY POWELL

Eliza Bazemore, believed to be the oldest person in Georgia, has died in Savannah. She was either 114 or 115.

The family said that a Bible, since destroyed, gave her birth date as Aug. 9, 1890. Georgia State University gerontology researcher Robert Young said that the earliest confirmed date of her birth is in 1891, according to the 1930 census.

"Although we couldn't find proof of birth for Eliza Bazemore, if born the date claimed, Aug. 9, 1890, she would have been the oldest living American," said Mr. Young, whose specialty is researching supercentenarians, people 110 or older. "Even at 114, she would have been the second-oldest in the U.S. and oldest in Georgia."

The oldest person in the United States is 115-year-old Elizabeth Bolden of Memphis, who has a confirmed birth date of Aug. 15, 1890. Georgia's next oldest residents are Anne Christopher of Rome, probably 109 or 110, and Alberta Davis of Thomson, indicated by research to be 109.

The world's oldest person is believed to be Maria Capovilla of Ecuador, with a recorded birth date of Sept. 14, 1889.

Eliza Elizabeth Bazemore died March 7 at Hospice of Savannah. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Tremont Temple Baptist Church in Savannah. Sidney A. Jones Funeral Home in Savannah is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bazemore lived in the same residence for 75 years and kept up her dancing and daily walks until she had a hip injury at 111, said her granddaughter Jeanese Riley of Savannah. She had worked as a domestic and later in child care.

Her grandmother, Ms. Riley said, was mild-mannered but feisty and competitive. Nothing riled her, and she seemed to enjoy everything about life, Ms. Riley said. Besides her walks, Mrs. Bazemore worked in her garden, traveled and was a regular at dances for older residents in Savannah.

"She danced till 110, and my mother danced with her in her wheelchair at senior dances at the civic center three times a year," Ms. Riley said. They danced at Mrs. Bazemore's birthday party last August.

Mrs. Bazemore wouldn't discuss her age, and her reply to any questions about it was, "A woman who would tell her age would tell everything," her granddaughter said.

Survivors include two daughters, Millie Wright and Alice Mae Clarke, both of Savannah; two sons, Fred Bazemore Sr. and Myers E. Daniel, both of Savannah; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
