George was born on 25 May 1921 in Washington, DC, the son of George E. Pickett III (1893–1959) and June Druehl Oglesby (1896–1986). George's great grandfather was a US Army officer in the Pacific NW in the 1850s (see The Pig War) and a CS Army General (see Pickett's Charge, the Battle of Gettysburg) in the Civil War. His grandfather was an Army officer in the Philippines and his father was an officer in the US Army. George grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina and attended the Virginia Military Academy before entering the US Military Academy in 1942, graduating in 1944. He underwent airborne training, with his first jump into Italy. He participated in the Korean conflict, Viet Nam and the Dominican Republic intervention. During his service he was awarded the Purple Heart and multiple Combat Infant Badges and Bronze Stars. At the time of his death he was chairman of the Department of Military Science at State College of Arkansas, Conway, and manager of the ROTC program. He died 30 Mar 1972 from complications from surgery after a lingering illness.

On 2 Sep 1944 he married Wilna Victoria Thomas in North Carolina; they were the parents of two children, Rachel and George Pickett V. George and Wilna divorced in 1963.

In 1964, George married Elsie A. Prevatte; they were the parents of one daughter, Alyssa.

Colonel Picket Dies

LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Army Lt. Col. George E. Pickett, 51, of Conway, great-grandson and namesake of the famous Confederate general, diedl here Thursday. He had been hospitalized since Dec. 30.

His great-grandfather led Picket's Charge at Gettysburg in July 1863.

Pickett was chairman of the Department of Military Science at State College of Arkansas, Conway.

Survivors include his widow, a daughter and his mother.

A memorial service for Lt. Col. George E. Pickett IV, chairman of the Department of Military Science at State College of Arkansas, was held Monday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Conway, Ark. Col. Pickett died Thursday at the Little Rock Veterans Administration Hospital, where he had been a patient since Dec. 20. He was 51.

Col. Pickett was a native of Washington, D. C., and graduated from high school in Charlotte. He attended Virginia Military Institute before going to the military academy at West Point, N. Y., in 1941.

Survivors include his wife, the former Elsie Prevatte of Lumberton, who is an instructor in sociology at State College of Arkansas; a daughter, Alyssa Ann, and his mother, Mrs. June Oglesby Pickett of Winston-Salem, N. C.
