Celesta C. "CC" Baldassari, 79, of 551 Stouffer Ave., died Friday, June 13, 2003, at home.

Born Aug. 17, 1923, in Casey, Ill., she was a daughter of the late Claude Combs and Esther Loomis Combs Gardner.

Her husband, George J. Baldassari Sr., died Jan. 30, 1999.

A veteran of the U.S. Marines, she served during World War II.

She joined the Landis-McCleaf Detachment of the Marine Corps League, Chambersburg, and its auxiliary in the mid-1950s and is one of the relatively few women members of the post having served in the Marines during World War II. She has held many positions in the auxiliary, including president, secretary/treasurer and judge advocate.

Over the past 45 years her volunteer work with the Marine Corps League included regular visits to the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va., to run holiday parties, fall carnivals and bingo games. She also represented the organization in the 21-Day Retreat flag ceremonies.

She was instrumental in the new post home in 1960, including having made curtains for the club. She was a life member of both the Marine Corps League and its auxiliary.

Other memberships included Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, life membership in Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, past secretary of the advisory council of the Franklin County Agency on Aging and Golden Age Club, all of Chambersburg.

She was active with the Chambersburg Senior Center and was a member of AARP.

When her children were young, she was a den mother with the Cub Scouts. She enjoyed working with ceramics, traveling and camping.

Surviving are three sons, G. John Jr. of Chambersburg, Robert G. (husband of Susan) of Vienna, Va., and Roy L. (husband of Kathie) of Lawrenceville, N.J.; three daughters, Linda B. Hughes of Chambersburg, Carol D. Baldassari of Hagerstown, Md., and Kay A. (Mrs. Brit) Salmon of Greencastle; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Norma Matson of Loda, Ill.; and a brother, Gerald Combs of Silver Spring, Md.

A brother, Wayne Combs, also preceded her in death.

Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home Inc., 333 Falling Spring Road. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Military graveside service will be conducted by Landis-McCleaf Detachment of the Marine Corps League.
