John and Jane Burnett Angus and their children, William, Margaret (Maggie), Isabelle, James, Elizabeth, and Thomas sailed from their home to Rosshire, Scotland in 1856. They had raised sheep in the hills of Northern Scotland. They arrived in Marshall County, Illinois and later moved farther west, locating on a farm on the Cass-Adams County line, one and a half miles east of what is now Highway 148. The family grew to include more children: Robert, Adam, Jane, Violet, Alex, and John.

James, Thomas, Robert, and Violet never married and remained on the family farm. Following the death of her brothers, Violet moved to Massena.
