Some believe his name was spelled "Champan". But I believe it was originally meant to be Champion, as it was spelled in the family Bible and on his marriage certificate, as well as in five Federal and State censuses. Champion was the surname of a family in Guilford County, NC where his father came from.

There is some variation in other public records, but not a single example of the "Champan" spelling anywhere.

The one and only place it was ever spelled Champan was on a hand-written statement he made about willing his farm to the son who was to take care of him till he died. In that document, he used no sentences or punctuation at all, and misspelled several other words, including the name of his son Samuel Riley Frazier, which he spelled "Rilly".
