David Collins Jr., 77, of rural Cherokee, died at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at his home after a long illness.
He was born Jan. 4, 1923, at Nevada, Mo., to David Sr. and Marion George Rucker Collins.
He moved to Baxter Springs at the age of 1. He lived and attended schools in Baxter Springs until he entered the United States Army.
Mr. Collins served in the United States Army during World War II, in the 101st Airborne Division.
He married Darlene Daniels on May 23, 1965, at Baxter Springs. She survives of the home.
Mr. Collins worked as a carpenter/ laborer for several construction companies. He also was self-employed as a farmer.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cherokee, a lifetime member of the VFW and was awarded the Purple Heart. He also was a former member of the American Legion.
Additional survivors include two sons, Dale Collins, of Columbus, and Glen David Collins, of Oak Ridge, Ore.; three daughters, Marsha Kay Horton, of Girard, Vickie Sue Gideon, of Oswego, and Joyce Ann Conklin, of Tyler, Texas; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 104 W. Main, Weir. Pastor Jamie Tickle will officiate.
Burial will follow in the New Pleasant View Cemetery.
Graveside military services will be provided by the Northeastern Oklahoma Veterans Funeral Detail.
Family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Weir, where friends may call after noon today.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Weir.
