Nina was born on the family farm, where she grew up. She was confirmed in the Kvernes Lutheran Church on June 25, 1911 under the instruction of Pastor O.J. Hungness.

Nina did housework before her marriage to Alf. They farmed in North Dakota until 1936 when they moved to Seattle. Nina worked in the Bon Marche store for years at the cosmetics department, for which she served as manager.
