After his marriage to Eliza and the birth of 6 children, in the mid-1860s, George and his family traveled by ship through the Great Lakes to Oceana County, Michigan. He was first employed in the Mears lumbercamps in Silver Lake, Oceana, Michigan. Then later he bought a farm northeast of Shelby, Oceana, Michigan.
