Reverend Athell Spires — Orangeburg

The Rev. Athell Spires, 84, of 123 Bible Church Road, Cordova, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg. Burial will be in the Beaver Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Neeses, directed by Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. of Orangeburg.

Reverend Spires was born Nov. 14, 1924, in McCall, SC, a son of the late Hammie Spires and the late Lula Belle Spires. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II. He was founder and pastor of the Bible Church of God in Cordova. He was the widower of Hazel Stroman Spires and was preceded in death by a son, David Bookhart; a granddaughter, Dawn Mount and brothers, Grady, Hammie Jr., George and Vonie Spires.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Bobby Mount of Cordova; son and daughter-in-law, Richard A. (Rick) and Beverly Spires of Santee; daughter-in-law, Maria Bookhart of St. Matthews; five grandchildren, Robin Moore, Donnie Mount, Richarda Anderson, Devana Bookhart and Dab Bookhart; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Jessie Bell Barton of St. Matthews; two brothers and sister-in-law, Tommy Spires and Lonnie and Camilla Spires, all of St. Matthews.
