GLENMONT -- Virginia McDowell Alexander, 84, of Glenmont, passed away Tuesday afternoon, March 25, 2008, following a short illness.

Memorial services will be Tuesday, April 1, at 1 p.m. at Nashville Church of Christ, Nashville, with Pastor Jeff Mulpas officiating.

Friends may call Tuesday from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the church.

Arrangements are being handled by Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg.

She was born April 1, 1923, in Killbuck Township and was the daughter of William Otis and Delphia (Purdy) McDowell. On June 26, 1942, she married Paul C. Alexander and he preceded her in death on April 29, 2001.

She was a 1942 graduate of Glenmont High School and in 1970 graduated from Ashland University.

Virginia was an elementary school teacher and a Title 1 reading teacher at both Killbuck and Millersburg elementaries.

Surviving is her special canine companion, Mitzie; four children and their spouses, Janet and Lanny Hawkins of North Canton, Dr. Gregory and Patricia Alexander of Ashton, Maryland, James and Carol Alexander of Pataskala, and Thomas and Irene Alexander of Glenmont; 10 grandchildren, Chris (Robyn), Scott (Jane), and DeAnna Hawkins, Katharine Alexander, Heather (Derek Fridman), Laura, Ashley, Megan Alexander, and Joey and Drew Alexander; four great-grandchildren, Bryce and Brock Hawkins, and Reneé and Dustin Hardgrove; and a sister, Cora Anderson of Big Prairie.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth, Joseph and Clarence McDowell; and three sisters, Helen Nommay, Mabel Morris and Pauline Anderson.

A luncheon will follow the memorial service.
