A member of Tennessee Militia and was at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, fought between Weatherford's forces and General Jackson's troops, at Tohopeka, on the Tallapoosa River. During the same year, on September 17, 1814, Benjamin Atchley joined the US Army in the 2nd war for independence fought against Great Britain.

He served as a private in Captain Elihu Millikan's Company, 3rd Regiment (Johnson's), East Tenn Militia. His service ended May 3, 1815. (per Adjutant General of the Army) Benjamin and Martha Atchley were members of Providence Baptist Church, located near their home.

Ben applied for and was granted a pension for his service in 1814-1815. His wife Martha was granted a widow's pension after Ben's death in 1875.
