In August of 1862, Ames enlisted in Co. 1, 20th Iowa volunteer infantry and was discharged the following year on account of wounds received which incapacitated him from further service.

Abram Johnson, since 1850, a resident of Iowa, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm Smothers of Ticonic. Wednesday, February 25, 1914 after a lingering illness of several weeks of asthma and general debility. The funeral was held on Thursday and interment was made at Mapelton beside his wife who preceded him 22 years prior.
He was born in Cooperstown, NY on May 19, 1832 and traveled to Iowa by a team.
He was married at DeWitt, Iowa, to Louise Ames. They went to Monona County in 1885. To the couple, 14 children were born.
