He was a member of the St. Nicholas Society, and a founding member of the Connecticut Society of the War of 1812. He was the grandson of General Robert Swartwout and son in law of Ohio Senator Alfred Edgerton. Satterlee was ambidextrous and was capable of writing two different things at the same time. After his wife's death in 1910 he moved in with his daughter-in-law and grandchildren with whom he resided until his death in 1923. He also knew the story of Brair Rabbit by heart, which he loved to tell to children.
