ELMIRA- Norman M. Avery, 79, formerly of Cohocton, New York died Friday morning (22 Sep 2006) at Elcor Health Services in Horseheads, New York after a long illness.

Born in Cohocton, New York on 7 Dec 1926, he was a son of the late Maynard Avery and Pearl Towner. In 1992 he was married in Wallace, New York to the former Sharon Lafler, who survives.

A former resident of Cohocton, where he attended school, Norman was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He retired form Mercury Aircraft after 20 years of employment.
Some of his favorite pastimes included fishing and playing bingo.
Besides his wife, Sharon of Elmira; his family includes his four sons, Leroy (Jackie) Avery of Cohocton, Wayne (Betty) Avery of Hornell, Keith (Lisa) Avery of Arkport and Spencer Avery of Hornell; his four daughters, Roxanne (Paul) VanCastle of Arkport, Debbie Page of Wayland, Valerie (Rick) Kelleher of Hornell and Penny Avery of Prattsburg; his 21 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; his four stepchildren; his two sisters, Doris (Howard) Rumsey of Dundee and Jeanette (Ernie) Smith of Wallace; also his nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Norman was predeceased by his sister, Edith and his brother, Frank.

Calling hours are from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Avoca Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St., Avoca, New York where a funeral service will be held following calling hours at noon Tuesday with Pastor Dan Gardner officiating. Committal services and interment, with military honors, will follow at Mapleview Cemetery, Cohocton, New York.
