Her father, William Sawtell, was one of 10 children born to Mary Jane (Nedwell) and Edwin Sawtell who had moved from Ohio to Wisconsin. Her father had been a teacher briefly, then came west to Roseville, California (with two brothers Guy and Junious) where he clerked for J.D. Pratt for 7 years. In 1889, her father married her mother Stella Schellhous, who was from a pioneer family in the region. Shortly after Gladys was born in 1890, her father formed a partnership with P.V. Siggins to purchase the J.D. Pratt store, a general merchandising store, and later became the President of Roseville's first formal bank, Roseville Banking Company. Gladys married Clarence Berkeley Anderson. She had one brother, Ernest Carl Sawtell.
