SARAH JANE DOWLING PASSES AWAY MONDAY NIGHT

Mrs. Sarah Jane Dowling, aged 87, died here Monday, June 15th, at the home of her daughter, Miss Leila Dowling, following two weeks illness.


Mrs. Dowling before her marriage was Miss Sarah Jane Windham, born and reared in Dale County, and the descendant of pioneer settlers in this county. She was the widow of Samuel Lawson Dowling, Confederate veteran, former County Treasurer, and one of Dale County's foremost citizens, who died six years ago.


Mrs. Dowling was the mother of six sons and one daughter, all of whom occupy prominent places in public life, as follows: T. L. Dowling, Gloster, La., prominent educator and member of the Louisiana State Senate for ten years; M. M. Dowling, merchant and planter, Gloster, La., Dr. H. B. Dowling, former dentist and now automobile dealer, Greenville, Ala., Miss Leila Dowling, Ozark, Ala., H.P. Dowling, merchant and planter and former of Grand Cane, La., Dr. J. D. Dowling, health officer of Jefferson County, Birmingham, Ala., and R. Young Dowling, prominent live stock dealer and member of City Council[,] Ozark, who died one year ago.


The pall bearers were composed of six of her grandsons, viz: Fred T. Samuel, Mack, Hugh, J. B., and Landon Dowling.


Funeral services were conducted at the residence by Rev. D. H. McNeal, former pastor of the Ozark Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. T. W. Talkington and Rev. J. L. Scott, followed by burial in old Claybank Cemetery, which has been the burial place of the Dowling family for five generations.
