She had six brothers and sisters:
Edward "Eddie" Berger (died in drowning accident at age 9),
Charles Russell Berger,
Grace Mary Berger,
Benjamine Smith Berger,
George Frederick Berger, and
Philip Bishop Berger.
She was born in Ohio. Her mother and father traveled to Loveland, Colorado and later moved again to Thermopolis, Wyoming. Her father traveled to Ohio in 1912 and had a heart attack while at his sister's funeral.
Her mother lived with her son Philip until her death and then was buried next to her husband in St. Louisville, Ohio. Bess married John J. Long in 1898. She had two children Louine Mary Long and Roger Long.
After her husband's death (before 1920) she never remarried. At some point, she moved to Long Beach, California and resided there until her death in 1974.
