John Carlton Karges Jr., born Sept. 9, 1929, in Sherman, N.Y., the son of John Carlton Karges Sr. and mother Faith (Moore Fotrune) Karges, of Sherman, passed away peacefully in the Veterans Hospital, Erie, Pa., on Dec. 21, 2008, at 2:03 a.m.John was a member of the Stanley Hose Fire Department from 1948 to 1974, and was past chief for four years, past president four years and mechanic. He had served in the US Army from 1947 to 1949 when he was called home to take care of his parents. He was civil defense director for many many years, justice of the peace for 17 years, in Sherman, co-partner of Esso Ser-vice station, of Sherman, co-partner of Richfield Service also in Sherman. He was service manager of Proctor Chevrolet of Findley Lake, N.Y., had worked at H.K. Nuttall, after school hours, until he went in the Army, then came home and worked at Nuttall's, and when Nuttall's closed, went to work at Boyles Motor Sales and Service until present. He was the loving husband of 56 years of Donna (Parment) Karges, of Sherman. Devoted father of, Danny (Jayne) Karges of Sherman, David (Susan) Karges, Edinboro, Pa., and Dean (Mary) Karges of Whitney Point, N.Y.

Loving grandfather of Timothy (Athena) Karges of Lakewood, N.Y. (three great grands); Nichole (Michael) Franklin of Forestville, N.Y. (three great grands); Tabitha (Brent) Croscut of Farmington, N.Y. (two great grands); Ryan Karges of Pittsburgh, Pa. (two great grands); Cory Karges of Whitney Point, N.Y.; Devan Karges and Drakye of Edinboro, Pa.; Melanie (Christopher) Truitt of Westfield, N.Y. (three great grands); Nacole (Brent) Ellis of Ripley, N.Y. (1 great grand); Jeffrey (Christina) Parks of Hookstown, Pa. (two great grands); Angelica Parks of Dunkirk, N.Y. (three great grands); Dale (Au-tumn) Parks of Aliquippa, Pa. (two great grands); Patrick (Melissa) Nechwedowich, Whitney Point, N.Y. (two great grand); Brandy Nechwedowich, Whitney Point, N.Y.; and Merrissa Nechwedowich, Homer, N.Y. And also by his sister, RuthAnn (Karges) Alday; and by very many many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, William Fortune and Edward Fortune.
