Oliver B. Burkhart passed away at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 6, 1926. “Oll” Burkhart, as he was better known by his friends, well known citizen of Christian county, passed away, after an illness of some six or eight months. His illness first started from what was thought to be an infection on his left shoulder but was later discovered to be a severe case of cancer, which caused his death. Funeral services were conducted at the Garrison Baptist church, Wednesday afternoon, December 7th. A number of friends attended the services and followed the remains to Garrison cemetery where they were laid away. Oliver B, Burkhart was born in Missouri on February 19, 1862 and died December 6, 1927, aged 85 years, 9 months and 19 days. On November 12, 1885, he was united in marriage to Mary Alice Jones, who died August 12, 1927. To this union nine children were born, three sons and six daughters. His wife, and infant son and his mother, Nancy Jane Burkhart, preceded him in death. He is survived by eight children as Follows: Mrs. A. C. Nelson, Mrs. Frank Coen, Mrs. N. C. Ives, Lloyd Burkhart and Mrs. Lola Burkhart, all of St. John, Kansas, Mrs. E. H. Stevens of Augusta, Kansas; Mrs. J. L. Workman, Garrison, Mo; Sterl Burkhart; twenty-three grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. Mr. Burkhart came to Garrison about forty years ago. He bought a farm two miles northeast of here, where he spent most of his time since. He was known to be one of the cleanest and hardest working farmers in Christian county. He was honest in all his dealings, willing and ready to help those in need. In 1900, he joined the M. W. A lodge and continued to be a faithful member until his death. He will not only be missed by his children, but by the many friends and neighbors in the community where he has lived so long.
