Swedish Monarch. She was a morganatic branch of the Brabant Dynasty of Hesse. Following anti-German sentiment in Britain during World War 1, the immigrant family of Princess Louise abolished their German titles in 1917, and transformed their name into English, and she became Lady Louise Mountbatten. Her parents were Prince Ludwig of Battenberg/Lord Louis Mountbatten, First Marquess of Milford Haven, and Princess/Marquise Victoria, originally of Hesse-Darmstadt. Louise's maternal aunt was the last Russian empress, Alexandra Feodorovna. Of Queen Louise's siblings, Princess Alice of Greece was the mother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and Lord Louis Mountbatten, Viceroy of India and Earl Mountbatten of Burma, was blown up by the IRA in Ireland in 1979. Louise Mountbatten participated in WW1 as a nurse in British field hospitals in France. In 1923 she married the widowed Crown Prince Gustav Adolf of Sweden, later king Gustav VI Adolf. There were no children in their marriage, but Louise became a very appreciated stepmother for her husband's 5 children and step-grandmother to the next king, Carl XVI Gustaf.
