Queen of Sweden. Second wife of King Gustav I of Sweden (after the sudden death of his first wife Queen Catherine), she was the daughter of Eric Abrahamson of a powerful family soon to be ennobled by the name of Leijonhufvud and still living today. Her father was executed by King Christian II of Scandinavia in the so-called Stockholm Blood Bath of 1520. In 1536 she married Gustav and with him had 10 children, nine of which survived childhood, in a marriage which was considered happy. Two of their sons were future kings John III and Carl IX, after their older half-brother King Eric XIV of Sweden was dethroned, imprisoned and murdered, accused of insanity. All five of Margaret's daughters married German princes. In 2016, to commemorate her quincentenary, a monumental bust of Queen Margaret by Britt-Marie Jern was raised in the park at the ruins of Gräfsnäs Castle near Alingsås in West Gothland, where she was born.
