Mrs. Rose Johnson, 97, passed away on Saturday night, July 28, 2012, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home and Palliative Care Center.

Rose was born on May 13, 1915 in Hampton County, South Carolina to Eloise and Henry Brooks. She later moved to Savannah, Georgia where she married Willis Johnson, and gave birth to her son, Willis Johnson, on May 29, 1931. Being a wife to "Big Willis" and a mother to Willis brought Rose much happiness and joy.

A few years after Willis' birth, the family moved to Manhattan, NY, where Rose worked as a waitress at the Campus Griddle right across the street from New York City College. Rose later worked at a famous New York bakery, where she served as union shop steward, and also at a meat packing facility until she retired. Anyone who ever visited Rose knows how much she loved to cook and you could never leave a visit without her cooking up something special for you. A longtime favorite dish of her son's was Rose's homemade banana pancakes.

Rose first came to Winston-Salem, North Carolina when Willis had his second child, Eric, and she moved in with them to help with the children while they worked. Willis' eldest child, Erika, cherishes the time that Rose spent living with them. One of Erika's favorite memories was taking the bus all over the city with her Grandma Rose. Rose was such a devoted and loving grandmother that she eventually made Winston-Salem her home in the early 1980s. Joining her in this move was her mother, Eloise Brooks, and her sister, Gertrude Howard. Everyone described the three as "The Golden Girls." For those that visited them, they remember the warm hugs, laughter, delicious meals, funny stories, lively debates, and the big green Cadillac that they all rode in through town. Rose was also very active in her church, Canaan Baptist, where she remained a faithful member.

Rose stayed active and energetic all of her life. She loved visiting with neighbors, taking the bus to go shopping, listening to baseball on the radio, watching game shows on tv, cooking and baking, traveling to Las Vegas with family, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Rose was preceded in her death by her husband, Willis Johnson; and her son, Willis Johnson.

She is survived by her two grandchildren, Erika Johnson (William, Jr.) Brooks of Encino, CA, and Eric (Andrea) Johnson of Loganville, GA; three great-grandchildren, William E. Brooks, III ("Trey"), Ila Grace Brooks, and Kylie Marie Johnson; and a niece and two nephews, Angie, Chris, and Stephen Hallmon of Seattle, WA.

Rose will be remembered as the phenomenal matriarch of her family who helped to raise three generations. At 97, she was still robust and full of life and an inspiration to all who knew her. Rose will be greatly missed by her family, but they are at peace knowing that she lived such a full life.

Funeral services will be held at 12noon Monday, August 6, 2012, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Todd Fulton officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12noon on Monday at the funeral home.
