Kate was born on February 20, 1925 to Hugh Maxwell Porter and Eliza Elizabeth Anderson Porter.
Kate was raised in a farming family in Collins, Georgia, later living in Savannah riding to work on the trolleys of Savannah before uniting in marriage to her husband of almost sixty years, the late Robert (Brother Bob) Jesse Jernigan, Sr. on March 17, 1943. First a devoted daughter and sister she expanded her life as a military wife, then minister's wife, a caring mother of six, a loving grandmother and great -grandmother.
Kate leaves to cherish her memory, her five children: Jesse Jernigan (Ysabel) Santa Rosa, CA, Marlene Eaton(Larry) of Wilmington, Bailey Jernigan (Fiancé Judy Pettit) of Rand,WV , Libby Jernigan (Pete Mangum) of Charlotte, NC, Mary Lee Hubbard(Tony ) of Burgaw, NC. Kate's son Hugh Jernigan was lost to her last year (survived by his wife Carol Jernigan). Kate is also survived by her two brothers and their wives, Don Porter ( Wanda) and Ben Porter( Eva Ruth), also her dear cousin/life long friend, Lucille Coleman of Collins, GA. Grandchildren: Melanie Jernigan, Mark Eaton, Katie Lukens(Matt),Jessica Hubbard(Fiancé Jamie Waugh), Jacob Hubbard, Brandon Humphrey, Uriah Jernigan (Elizabeth), Bailey Jernigan, Larry Clewis (Rebecca), Wesley Clewis. Great-Grandchildren- Natalie Lukens, Eli and Jake Jernigan, Hunter and Gannon Clewis, Bryanna and Destiny Clewis. And like family to her - Jason and Jenni Harris, their children Andy and Jake, also Kim Barham.
She began a life in church at Newport Baptist Church, Newport, NC making life long friendships in the community. In addition to attending the school activities of her children, she stayed active and busy in her role as pastor's wife at Immanuel Baptist Church, making two mission trips to Brazil, attending / often hosting revivals in other communities. Leading Sunday Schools Classes, Vacation Bible School, GA'S, singing in the choir and helping in Christmas plays, she generously held the hands of her church members through their life difficulties sharing a kind word and a prayer. She loved her recent church Greenfield Baptist Church lead by Pastor Dan Bennett (Sonya). Never one to complain regardless of her circumstances, she was always only interested in "How are you and yours?"
Visitation will be held on Tuesday August 7, 2012 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home, 3915 Oleander Drive Wilmington, NC 28403.
Funeral Service will be held at 1:00PM on Wednesday August 8, 2012 at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Bennett officiating. Graveside service will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens, 306 Bradley Drive Wilmington, NC 28409.
