Born in Harper's Ferry, then part of Virginia, Aaron Putnam lived in Ohio and Indiana before coming to California. His father was reportedly a gunsmith who provided and repaired arms in Washington for the War of 1812. According to an article published in the Los Angeles Herald only months before his death, one of Aaron's earliest memories was an excursion aboard the Fulton Steamboat. Husband of Eliza J. (Smith) Putman, they married in Ohio, where Aaron worked as a chair maker. In Indiana, he worked as a cabinet maker, painter and mechanic. He came to California after 1880.
