His father was reportedly a gunsmith who provided and repaired arms in Washington for the War of 1812. (Smith) Putman, they married in Ohio, where Aaron worked as a chair maker. In Indiana, he worked as a cabinet maker, painter and mechanic. He came to California after 1880.
