Son of William and Mary Cowan. William and a son named Bill (Joseph's younger brother) died in an epidemic not long apart that killed so many at that time. It was just called a fever. Mary Cowan came from England with Joseph, his two sisters Anna and Fanny and her grandson John Cowan. Joseph worked in the tube mill and was a lay minister.

ELLWOOD CITY, June 12 -- Joseph Cowan, 62, of this city passed away at his home shortly after 10 o'clock last night after a lingering illness by a heart ailment. The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Emma Cowan; five daughters, Mrs. Lucy Hovek [sic Houk], Mrs. Nellie Johnson, Mrs. Ruth Nagel, of city, Mrs. Betty Rodger[s] of Madison, Ill., Mrs. Doris Woods [Woodin] of Waynesville, Mo.; three sons, Joseph, Wilbert and John of Ellwood. The remains will be at the late home until time for the funeral services, which will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon from the I. J. VanGorder funeral home on Fifth Street. Rev. Hayward of the Harmony Baptist church will officiate. Interment will be made in the Locust Grove cemetery.
