ANTON HOLSEN

Anton Holsen, 83, of 602 Columbus street, who retired last August after serving
41 years as engineer of the water utility and later combined electric and water
utility here, died last night at the Holy Family hospital.
Mr. Holsen has been in failing health several months and was moved to the
hospital from his home last Saturday.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from the Holsen home, the Rev.
A. C. Fischer of the First Reformed church officiating. Burial will be in
Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. Holsen was born at Manitowoc Rapids in 1858 and in 1882 married Miss Ann
Helwig, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Helwig, at Branch. Had Mr.
Holsen lived until May 2 the couple would have observed their 60th wedding
anniversary.
Two years after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Holsen moved to Alma Center where
they spent ten years, returning to Manitowoc to reside. Forty-one years ago Mr.
Holsen entered the employ of T. W. Gray, head of the Manitowoc Water Works
Company, and became engineer of the plant. When the utility was taken over by
the city in 1911, he continued with the plant and following consolidation of the
water and electric utilities after the city acquired the latter plant from the
Schuette interests, Mr. Holsen was name engineer.
He saw a marked transition in the plant from the time he started working in 1900
until he retired August 1, last. In the early days there were only two workmen
in the waterworks boiler room. Each worked 12-hour shifts, seven days a week.
Mr. and Mrs. Holsen were active for year in the circles of the First Reformed
church. On May 2, 1932, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the
home on Columbus street, which adjoins the utility plant.
Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Oscar Becker of this city and Mrs. William
Beduhn of Two Rivers; brother, Joseph, of this city; sister, Mrs. Clara Braun
of this city; eight grandchildren and great-grandchild. A son Harold Holsen,
died 18 months ago. The body may be viewed at the Beduhn funeral home in Two
Rivers Saturday afternoon and evening and will be brought to the Holsen home
here Sunday.
