LEONARD J. KAUFMAN

L. J. Kaufman, Industrialist, Dies Saturday
MANITOWOC—Leonard J. Kaufman of 2106 Markham St., president and
general manager of Kaufman Mfg. Co., died unexpectedly last Saturday
night at Holy Family Hospital. He was 70.
Mr. Kaufman, a native of the city, founded the company bearing his
name in 1927. It was incorporated in 1936 and moved to its present
quarters at 29th Street and Meadow Lane. Mr. Kaufman pioneered in
developing a company line of machine tools.
He served 15 years with Manitowoc Public Utilities Commission, beginning
in 1949 and was two-times president, elected in 1961. Currently he was
a member of Manitowoc Harbor Commission.
He had been a member of the Society For the Advancement of Management,
member and past chairman of American Society of Tool Engineers, and a
past director of Northeast Wisconsin Industrial Assn. and former
Manitowoc Chamber of Commerce.
Yacht Club Commodore
A member of the Kiwanis Club of Manitowoc, he served as president in
1948. He was a past commodore of Manitowoc Yacht Club and was also
affiliated with Knights of Columbus, Council No. 710, and Elks Lodge
No. 687.
Mr. Kaufman was born May 8, 1899, son of the late Joseph and Mary Becker
Kaufman. He married Eleanor Steinbach Sept. 23, 1930, at Sacred Heart
Catholic Church.
She survives him with two daughters, (private); two sons, (private);
three sisters, Mrs. Francis X. O'Connor and Mrs. Charles H. Shemchak,
of Manitowoc, and Mrs. Magnus O. Johnson of Isamti, Minn.; and 16
grandchildren.
Funeral Wednesday
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and
at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Innocents Catholic Church. The Rev. Leo J. Schmitt
will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Tuesday where a wake
service will be conducted at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Intensive Care Unit of Holy Family Hospital.
