she was Thomas' second wife
-------------------
Mrs. Olevia Speight, the relict of Rev. Henry Speight, has been critically ill at Arringdale. Mrs. Speight is 87 years old and in this sickness her children were called to her bedside with fears that she would change worlds. To the surprise of all her daughter, Mrs. Venie S. Hayes, with whom she lived, was suddenly stricken down with spinal meningitis and in four days was dead. The local physician, Dr. Drewry, did all he could, and Dr. Bryant was also called in, and later Dr. J. R. Speight, of Norfolk, was wired for, but when Dr. Speight reached there the disease had made such dreadful headway that in spite of his and Dr. Drewry's heroic efforts death came. Mrs. Hayes was taken to Gatesville for burial in the Baptist churchyard by the side of her husband, the late Thomas Hayes, who was a leading citizen and business man in his community. Messrs. Walter Thomas and Burwell Hayes, the sons of Mr. Hayes first wife, are all prominent business men in Gatesville, and there are other members of the family who are also doing well, and their high character merits success. Hon. L. Hoffler, a lay-member of the church, conducted the burial services of Mrs. Hayes.

==========

HAYS. - At Aringdale, Va, sister Lavenia Hays (nee Speight) passed to her reward March 20, 1901, at the age of 46. She was the daughter of Rev. Henry Speight, and under the influence of pious parents at the age of fourteen, upon a profession of faith, she was baptized into the fellowship of Middle Swamp church, Gates County, N.C., where she remained a faithful member until death. She graduated in 1876 at Chowan Baptist Female Institute in a class of twenty, ten of North Carolina and ten from Virginia; and true to the spirit of the Institute, she was ever an ardent lover of missions, and an earnest Sunday school worker. Together with her many friends, she leaves a little daughter of nine three brothers and three sisters and an aged mother.
