Johnnie P. Shepherd (nee Payne), 85, of Lorain, Ohio, departed this life on Friday, February 3, 2012, at New Life Hospice of Lorain, Ohio following a short illness.
She was born in , Alabama on May 11, 1926. She graduated from Lomax-Hannon High School in Greenville, Alabama in 1944. Johnnie accepted the Lord at an early age at Olive Branch Baptist Church in Georgiana, Alabama. She later joined Union Baptist Church in Greenville, Alabama. She and her husband moved to Elyria in 1952 where she united with Second Baptist Church of Elyria. She became a Faithful Fifty Member of the church in 2006. She was honored by the church in 2009 as Mother of the year. As a faithful member of Second Baptist Church, Mrs. Shepherd belonged to Harrison & Rucker Missionary. In her earlier years, she presided over the kitchen committee and sang in the Twilight Choir.
Mrs. Shepherd worked as a housekeeper and a nurse's aide in private homes. Her main responsibility, however, was working side-by-side with her husband to raise their ten children.
Mrs. Shepherd will be sadly missed by her daughters: Joanne (James) Tucker of Elyria, Betty (Mike) Menfield of Detroit, MI., and Bonnie Pardon of Elyria, sons: Ronnie (Angela) of Lorain, Bobby (Marte) of Beechwood, Oh., Craig (Lonna) of Cedar Hill, TX., Johnny (Vilma) of Bedford, TX., and Mark (Penny) of New Wilmington, PA., sisters: Fairer Mae Beach & Willa Dean Payne of Greenville, Ala., Dorothy Hastings and Duressa McGhee of Dayton, Oh., Zinvaleen Watkins of Riverdale, Ga., and Delorise (Clausel) Maxwell of Detroit, MI., 25 grandchildren and 51great-grandchildren, brothers-in-law: Joe (Lillie) and Walter (Alice) Powell of Elyria, Dempsey (Mary) Powell of Birmingham, Ala., and Wylie (Ethel) Powell of Greenville, Ala., sisters-in-law: Carrie Lee Hamilton of Mobile, Ala., Johnnie Lowery and Lillian Cheatham of Birmingham, Ala., and many nephews, nieces and cousins.
Mrs. Shepherd was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Roy Shepherd, daughters: Minerva Daniels and Glenda Corn, parents: Eli and Mattie Payne and brothers: Willie and Edward Payne.
Services for Mrs. Shepherd will be held Saturday, February 11, with a wake at 11 a.m. followed by services at 12:00 p.m. at Second Baptist Church, 427 Chapman Lane (16th Street) Elyria, Ohio, with the Pastor, Rev., Dr. Carl P. Small to officiate services.
Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria, Ohio.
Professional Services entrusted to Carter Funeral Homes, Inc. 127 W. Bridge Street Elyria, Ohio.
Friends will be received in the home of her daughter, Joanne Tucker..
