BITES TONGUE, BLOOD POISON AND THEN DEATH
John Torrison, Valders Mail Carrier, Meets End Peculiarly.
TONGUE SWOLLEN, CHOKES FOR AIR.

Death under most perculiar circumstances and as result of the strange mishap ended the life of John Torrison a well known resident of Valders, whose demise occurred at the Holy Family hospital in this city Wednesday after he had been brought here for care by physicians called to attend him. Mr. Torrison's body has been taken to Valders for burial from the late home there on Friday.

Mr. Torrison's death was caused by blood poisoning which developed from an injury only a few days ago. Mr. Torrison was employed in the United States mail delivery service, as a rural mail carrier from the Valders post office and was injured while discharging his duties as carrier. While at his work and in haste to alight from the wagon Mr. Torrison, in jumping from the wagon in some way bit his tongue, his teeth closing upon the tongue with considerable force, causing laceration of the tongue and developing a serious and painful injury.

From the laceration caused by the teeth, the tongue became swollen and within a few hours, Mr. Torrison experienced intense sufferings. Physicians were summoned from this city to attend him and it was decided to remove the patient to the hospital here where he could be given constant care and attention. Efforts of physicians to relieve the suffering man and reduce the swelling of the tongue did not succeed and Wednesday morning, Mr. Torrison's condition became alarming and he died early in the day. Because of the swollen condition of the tongue it was hard for the pateint (sic) to get a sufficient supply of air for the body and death was virtually due to strangulation.

Mr. Torrison was one of the best known residents of the county in the vicinity in which he made his home and his sudden and unexpected death is a shock to a large circle of friends. Mr. Torrison formerly engaged in the hotel business, having conducted a small hostelry, but later he secured an appointment as a rural mail carrier which he had held for some time. Mr. Torrison was 50 ( correction 44) years of age and is survived by a widow, one child, a daughter aged 15.
A member of the association of Manitowoc County Rural Mail Carriers and the state association, Mr. Torrison was well known in this city and throughout the county. He attended the annual picnic of the association held a week ago Sunday and had been active in the work of the association.

Rural carriers of the local postoffice have arranged to visit the Torrison home at Valders with flowers as a tribute of respect to the dead man. The funeral will be held at Valders from the late home to-morrow.
