Civil War Union Army Soldier. Born in Manayunk, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he served during the Civil War as a Private in Company E, 15th United States Regular Infantry, being mustered in in August 1862, and was mustered out on August 12, 1865. He was captured by Confederate forces at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia on September 20, 1863 and was held prisoner until May 8, 1864, when he was exchanged for a Confederate soldier. He was a member of GAR Post 46, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After the war he visited Gettysburg 5 times for encampments, ceremonies, and reunion of the Blue and Gray in 1937.
