Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered in as a Private in Company C, 58th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on September 16, 1861. During his subsequent service he was promoted to Corporal on March 1, 1862, Sergeant on September 1, 1864, 1st Sergeant on December 1, 1864, and to 1st Lieutenant on February 15, 1865. He served through the end of the war, and resigned his commission on July 28, 1865.
