Famed British zoologist. He was a professor at University College, London (1874–90) and Oxford (1891–98) and was director of the Natural History department of the British Museum (1898–1907). He was a founder of the Marine Biological Association in 1884, which established an important station at Plymouth, Devon. Influential as teacher and writer on biological theories, comparative anatomy, and evolution, Lankester studied the protozoa, mollusca, and arthropoda. He coined the term "homoplasy" and opposed the theistic overtones of the term "homology." Lankester also defined the basal split among animals between Coelenterata (jellyfish and relatives) and Triploblastica. He was also mentioned in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Lost World"(1912). He was knighted in 1907.
