Alva was the oldest of 8 children born to Delmon McGrady and Ura Princess (Dickerson) McGrady.//As a young man he helped on the family farm and then operated a country store in the Gladesboro area of Carroll County.// On 19 June 1940 Alva married Goldie Jackson of the Laurel Fork area.//He was called to leave his family and entered active duty for WWII on 30 Nov 1943. He embarked for Europe on 26 Jun 1944 to serve with the U.S.Army Chemical Corps. //Alva served in the following theater of operations: European, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central European Theaters. For his service he was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the European Theater Medal.// He returned to the US on 7 Dec 1945 and was discharged from the Army on 5 Feb 1946. Alva was one of many of the "Greatest Generation" to serve their country at one of the most critical times in our nation's history. // After the war, he opened an auto sales business and started McGrady Motors, an auto dealership and service center. //Alva and Goldie lived their lives together in the same house in Hillsville until Alva died of a lung disease that was contributed to his service in the Chemical Corps. Alva and Goldie had two chldren, a son, Joseph Alva, and a daughter, Rebecca Ann.
