Sister Benedict Dorey CSA, 87, a resident of St. Francis Home, 33 Everett Street, in Fond du Lac, died at the Home Thursday, January 5, 2006.
Sister Benedict was born June 21, 1918 in Kamloops, British Colombia, Canada, the daughter of Herman and Clara Gouthier Dorey. As a young woman she worked as a nurse at Holy Cross Hospital in Chicago where she met the Sisters of St. Agnes. At the age of 28 she joined their Congregation and professed her vows on August 15, 1949.
Sister Benedict served as a nurse for more than 40 years, ministering in IL, KS, WI, and MS. A special time in her nursing career was her years she worked in rural Mound Bayou and Shelby, MS where she served as a home health nurse. During those years in Mississippi she worked especially with the women and children and assisted many women in the birthing process. After retiring from her nursing profession she continued to minister in Shelby, MS for another seven years, serving as a parish minister. After returning to Fond du Lac in 1989 Sister performed a variety of volunteer ministries reaching out to the elderly and needy of the Fond du Lac community until her health required her to retire to Nazareth Heights.
Sister Benedict is survived by three step-nieces, Peggy (Daniel) Bigham of Calhoun, GA, Linda (Marty) Marcellus of Sandusky, OH, and Carol (Larry) Lance of Evergreen, CO. and by the members of the Congregation of Saint Agnes with whom she lived and ministered.
Sister was preceded in death by two brothers, Archibold and Herman Dorey.
Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 6:30P.M. on Monday, January 9, 2006 at St. Francis Home Chapel at 33 Everett St. in Fond du Lac. The Rev. Edward Sippel will be the celebrant. Burial will take place at 9:30A.M. on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at St. Joseph Springs Cemetery in Fond du Lac.
Visitation: Visitation will be held at Nazareth Court, 375 Gillett Street in Fond du Lac after 1:00PM on Monday, January 9, 2005, with a prayer service at 4:00P.M.
