WAR VETERAN IS STRICKEN AT 97, BORN IN ENGLAND Once Worked as Canal Boatman, Was Married 12 Years Ago.
Carlisle, Jan. 5 -- Joseph Robinson, 97-year-old Civil War veteran, died last night at his home, 141 East Mulberry street after an illness of seven weeks.
Robinson was a native of Carlisle, England, and came to the United States with his grandparents when 9 years old. Before the Civil War he was employed as a boatman on the Erie Canal and when hostilities began enlisted in the New York volunteers. He came to this town at the close of the conflict.
He was one of four surviving Civil War veterans in Carlisle and is survived by his widow, Mrs. Nettie Robinson, who he married twelve years ago.
Funeral service will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the W.J. Ewing Est., funeral parlors. Burial will be in the Old Graveyard.
