Sister was born in Greenleaf, WI on November 09, 1909, a daughter to Emil and Catherine Gonnering Gussert. She professed her first vows in the Congregation of St. Agnes on August 15, 1932.
Sister Irene was a much-loved teacher for nearly fifty years in the states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Kansas, and Indiana. Middle-school and junior high students were her specialty. Her sense of humor endeared her to students and colleagues alike. Sister's first year of retirement was spent in telephone ministry to elderly persons who lived alone at home. Sister's pleasant voice and inviting smile made her a welcome and welcoming receptionist at St. Agnes Convent for many years. As Sister failed in both body and mind these last few years needing to be cared for rather than caring for others, she never totally lost her cheerful manner nor her concern for others.
She is survived by two nephews and four nieces, Michael Parmentier of Maribel, WI, Donald Parmentier of Menomonee Falls, WI, Beverly (Gussert) Smits, Kathy Greene, Patricia (Toan) Nguyen all of Green Bay, WI, and Janice Melberg of Wrightson, WI; by the members of the Congregation of St. Agnes with whom she lived and ministered and by other relatives and friends.
Preceding Sister in death are her brothers and sisters, Clarence, Roman, Urban, Loretta and Genevieve Parmentier.
The Sisters of St. Agnes are grateful to the staff at St. Francis Home for their care for Sister Irene.
Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:30 P.M. on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at the St. Francis Home Chapel, 33 Everett Street, Fond du Lac. The Rev. Edward Sippel will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Springs Cemetery on County Road K.
