Abraham Baer was born in Alsace, France, and immigrated to the United States as a child in 1848. He enlisted as a private for 3 years at New Orleans, Louisiana, on May 21, 1862. Private Baer was mustered into Company E, 13th Connecticut Infantry. He was transferred to Company D on December 29, 1864. He was mustered out at Hartford, Connecticut, on June 26, 1865. After the war he headed west to Missouri. He married (1) Ursula Morgan in Missouri in 1874. He filed for a Civil War veteran disability pension in Missouri on March 29, 1884, and received certificate No. 532,745. He later moved to Los Angeles, California, where he appears on a list of veterans attending a reunion at Redondo Beach on September 21, 1904 (Los Angeles Herald, Vol. XXXI, No. 358, Sep. 22, 1904; 9:6). A naturalized U.S. citizen, he registered to vote in Los Angeles County (1908 Los Angeles Great Register; 1910 US Census). After Ursula died at Los Angeles in 1912 he married (2) the twice widowed Elizabeth Ann McCoy* at Los Angeles about 1914. He was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle, Los Angeles County, from his home at Los Angeles, on August 2, 1916. He was furloughed at his own request to return home October 13, 1916, where he died under Elizabeth's care just two months later. Elizabeth died in 1920 without ever filing for a Civil War widow's pension.
