John Hankey followed farming a few miles west of Massillon, Ohio until the death of his first wife, when he went into the dry goods business with another man. He soon after bought out his partner and a couple of years later sold out his store and purchased a stock of clothing and opened a store in West Salem in 1859. In 1861 he removed to Burbank, Ohio and some years later disposed of his business and went onto a farm in Medina County where he died in 1867.
