He was two and a half years old, when his mother died of tuberculosis. He went to live with his grandmother Polly (Jones) Dodd for a time.

He married a girl named Anna and for many years, they lived in Oklahoma. He returned to Sangamon County in 1936, living and working in Springfield as a switchboard operator for the Springfield.

He later worked in the office of Charles Carpentier, the Secretary of State and retired there in 1959.
