According to a news article, "Ex-Slave Starts to School at 116", by Talmadge Canant, written for the Associated Press, published December 11, 1966,in the CORSICANA SUN, John Cotton remembers being being on the auction block in South Carolina along with his parents and a group of other enslaved persons. They were purchased by landowners from Texas. His first work experiences were in Milam County, TX, where he was living upon emancipation. He worked at "Brazos Bottom" and later in the Blooming Grove area on the Griffin and Hammons' farms. He later worked on the R.C. Saunders farm in Lone Cedar. At the time of his death, John Cotton was married to his fourth wife, Adah Cotton, whom he married in the 1920's. He had 3 sons from a previous marriage and two were living at the time of his death.
